as it relates to defense. i repeat, $2.6 trillion already all coming from non-defense. if we're going to have sequester the defense has to do their share. >> "meet the press" i asked leon panetta how likely it is that automatic defense cuts will actually go into effect. is sequester going to happen? >> i certainly hope not. if congress stands back and allows sequester to take place i think it would really be a shameful in irresponsible act. why in god's name would members of the congress elected by the american people that would undermine the support for our men and women in uniform? why would do you that? >> secretary panetta defended the man the president picked to succeed him, former nebraska senator chuck hagel telling me members of the armed services committee passed up the opportunity for more important questions in order to launch partisan attacks. >> it's pretty obvious that the political knives were out for chuck hagel. >> that's what you think it was. it was totally partisan? >> what disappointed me, they talked about past quotes. what about the war in afghanist afghanistan, the war

hampshire, mccain even floated this possibility -- >> as far as secretary of defense is concerned, there's a lot of people that could do that. one of them i think is senator chuck hagel. >> but yesterday the air in the hearing room was thick. maybe it was bitterness. we don't know. mccain may feel about his old friend as mccain hammered hagel for the opposition to the 2007 troop surge in iraq. >> were you correct or incorrect, yes or no? >> my reference to the surge being -- >> are you going to anxious the question, senator hagel? the question is, were you right or wrong? that's a pretty straightforward question. >> well, i'm not going to give you a -- a yes-or-no answer on a lot of things. >> let the record show you refused to answer that question. >> by the way, incoming secretary of state john kerry who glided through his nomination hearing was also opposed to the iraq surge. republican senators who hadn't much criticized hagel before the hearing rushed to do so during and after it. florida's marco rubio said he would not support him. lindsey graham said it's not looking good. alabama

the biggest defense of the president has come from lindsay graham. you can't have 535 referring to members of congress, 535 commanders in chief and you can't have judges deciding who gets kill and when a drone strike happens. i have been surprised that there is not even after action oversight meaning i understand that there is this -- you have to let the president protect and make these decisions, but should well be a provision that makes the president and administration depend every single one of the drone strikes after it happens? >> i think that would make a lot of sense. i'm not on the intelligence committee. i don't know how much that happens. when the american citizen was killed who was a new mexico can and born in new mexico, i demanded the legal opinions at that time and i pursued that. it's important there be the oversight that congress play a role. we are not trying to call the shots and try to be commanders in chief. what we are trying to do is find out what the legal framework is and what the limits are. to make sure that under any president this is done with the utmost care. >
